Thanks for the comment :)

So far, I've got a pretty solid rig for about $1k.
-Core 2 Quad
-DDR 2 800 (PC 6400)
-Motherboard that'll do PCI 2.0
-Radeon HD 3870 (it's the best PCI 2.0 card I could find, performance and heat balanced [the 8800 slimlines overheat])
-80GB SATA 3GB/s 7200rpm drive
-new psu, dunno which one

if you can recommend some improvements or recommend some cost cutting, that'd be AWESOME :-D

I don't know what motherboard you have, but I hope it overclocks well. Those quad core intels OC pretty damn well. Get a very good aftermarket heatsink or watercooling, and squeeze some power out of it. I'm not a fan of ATI cards (many many bad experiences with them) but overclock that as well. I hope you have 4GB of RAM (if not, GET MORE). Make sure it's quality ram that can also overclock well. Get a nice Enermax PSU, 600W sounds about right for your system. But yeah, work on cooling and then overclock it to the limits lol.

I've got an oversized fan and heatsink (So big I can't fit my PSU in the case right now)

I been thinkin about that ATI card, or cards, as I was planning to crossfire them. From the looks of it, a single 8800 Ultra could crank out the same, if not more performance as Crossfired HD 3870's for about the same price. It'd also produce less heat, being a single unit and all.

and I'm not skimping out on anything anywhere. I'm getting a $200+ mobo with the fastest ram it'll take (DDR3 1333? I don't remember off top of my head), and many of the reviewers on the products I'm looking have said nothing but good things about overclocking the sin out of these parts.

it's gonna be a good day when it's finished ^_^
